A MARK OF DISTINCTION
Hill Springs was opened to business in December 2016. This is a project that inspires women and Malawians in diaspora. Waida Lakudzala coming from a very humble background went to KCN in 1986 where she got her Diploma in Nursing and university certificate in Midwifery.
In 1995 she followed her husband to the UK and worked in private sector as a nurse. In 1999 she got her master’s degree in international health from Queen Margaret University College in Edinburgh, Scotland. Her MSc is in Health Services Management, Health Policy and Planning, Project Design and Management, Reproductive Health, Gender Health and Development and International Health Issues.
As a mother of 4 boys, full time employment was not easy. She needed something flexible that would help her develop to full potential and at the same time make use of the knowledge and experience. In 2005 she started a recruitment agency for nurses and health care assistants in UK and it was incorporated in 2012 and have since been the director of the company.
Hill Springs was born out of that and it was always her desire to contribute to the development of Malawi as that was the key point in her statement to further studies. Support from the family was very crucial and so was the commitment of skilled Malawians that she had put on the ground and have worked at this project since 2012 when construction started and continues up to now. These are not big contractors but hard-working individuals that have grown and developed their skills over the period. This group comprises of an architect, builder, carpenter, electrician, plumber, tiler and painter.
As a hospitality establishment, Hill Springs offers full time employment to Malawians and has brought development to the areas. It is important for women to get support from families and governments to get empowered and reduce gender gaps. Government policy that supports those in diaspora is also crucial in promoting investment.
